Aluminum and aluminum alloy hard anodic oxide film JIS H8603

JIS H8603 was created based on ISO 10074, Specification for hard anodic oxidation coatings on aluminum and its alloys, which was published as the first edition in 1994, without changing the technical contents. A regulation item (indication) that is a Japanese Industrial Standard but is not stipulated in the corresponding international standard has been added as a Japanese Industrial Standard.

Scope of application

This standard mainly defines the effective surface of a hard anodized film applied to the base material of aluminum and aluminum alloy wrought materials, cast materials, etc. for the purpose of abrasion resistance.

JIS H8603

1. 1. Definition

The definitions of the main terms used in this standard are based on JIS H0201 and the following.

a) Hard anodic oxide film

Anodized film of aluminum material treated using a low temperature electrolytic bath or a special electrolytic bath to which various organic acids are added.

It is characterized by being harder than a film treated by a usual method and having excellent wear resistance. Normally, no sealing process is performed.

When corrosion resistance is required, hole sealing treatment is performed, but in this case, wear resistance tends to decrease.

b) Abrasion resistance standard test piece

Specimens prepared according to the specifications shown in Annex 1 in order to correlate the results of wear resistance tests conducted at various locations.

2. type

The type of film depends on the material of the substrate. (Table 1)

Note) If the application of Table 1 is not preferable due to the alloy composition, the corresponding type may be changed by agreement between the delivery parties.

3. 3. quality

1. Appearance

The appearance of the film shall be subjected to an appearance test, and the surface texture shall be uniform, and there shall be no harmful defects such as spalling, blistering, and dusting.

2. Film thickness

As a general rule, the film thickness shall be the average film thickness. The test is a film thickness test, and the film thickness and the degree of uniformity thereof are based on the agreement between the delivery parties.

Remarks The average film thickness is the average value of several measurement point film thicknesses measured according to JIS H8680-1 or JIS H8680-2.

3. Film hardness

The film hardness shall be tested by the film hardness test and shall comply with Table 2.

4. Abrasion resistance

The wear resistance of the coating shall be tested by a wear resistance test and shall comply with Table 3, Table 4 or Table 5, respectively.

The choice of test is based on the agreement between the delivery parties.

5. Film mass per unit area

The film mass per unit area shall be tested by the film mass test and shall comply with Table 6.

The conduct of this test is by agreement between the delivery parties.

6. Corrosion resistance

The corrosion resistance of the sealed film shall be tested for corrosion resistance and shall comply with Table 7. The conduct of this test is by agreement between the delivery parties.

7. Dielectric strength

The dielectric strength of the film is tested for dielectric strength, and the allowable value and the implementation of this test are based on the agreement between the parties to the delivery.

4. test

1. Appearance test

Appearance tests are usually performed in diffuse daylight. The illuminance when performed under artificial lighting shall be 600 lx or more. The background is preferably an achromatic color such as matte black or gray.

Note) Diffuse daylight refers to the light from the north window that avoids direct sunlight from 3 hours after sunrise to 3 hours before sunset.

2. Film thickness test

The film thickness test is based on the microscopic cross-section test method (JIS H8680-1) and eddy current measurement method (JIS H8680-2).

The measurement position and the number of measurements on the effective surface are agreed between the parties to the delivery.

3. Film hardness test

The film hardness test is performed using a Micro Vickers tester and the cross section of the film is performed in accordance with JIS Z 2244. The test load is 0.490N, but 0.245N may be used when the film thickness is thin or when the film is relatively soft.

If the film is thick, measure the center of the cross section of the film or the substrate side. The test value is usually the average value of three or more repeated tests.

4. Abrasion resistance test

The wear resistance test is based on one of the following.

Reciprocating plane wear test

The reciprocating plane wear test is performed by the method specified in JIS H8682-1.

The test shall be carried out for both the wear resistance standard test piece and the test piece in accordance with the test conditions for the hard film shown in Table 2 of the same standard.

b. Injection wear test

The injection wear test is performed by the method specified in JIS H8682-2.

The test shall be carried out for both the wear resistance standard test piece and the test piece in accordance with the test conditions for the hard film shown in Table 2 of the same standard.

c. Flat plate rotary wear test

The flat plate rotary wear test (Taver type wear test) is performed according to the test method shown in Annex 2 (specified).

The test conditions shall be in accordance with either 5. or 6 of Annex 2 (regulation). The choice depends on the agreement between the delivery parties.

5. Film mass test

The film mass test is performed by the method specified in JIS H8688.

6. Corrosion resistance test

The corrosion resistance test is based on the neutral salt spray test specified in JIS Z 2371.

7. Dielectric strength test

The dielectric strength test is based on the method specified in JIS H8687.

5. Inspection

The inspection of the film shall be carried out by various tests and shall pass the quality regulations.

The sampling method and lot size of the target test piece shall be determined by an agreement between the delivery parties in consideration of the scale of the processing facility, product type, size, quantity, etc.
